Telfair County didn't have a baseball team until either the Sophomore or Junior year. Mr. Danny Lee McLaughlin used the City of Helena's road grader to level the ground (about where the gymnasium current stands). Watchful eyes from the Biology classroom were more interested in the dirt being pushed around outside the classroom window rather than anything Mr. Franklen Boney had to teach.
They had played together since Little League. Lanier was always the pitcher and Duke was always the catcher. Countless number of pitches were exchanged between the two. There was alway time for the two of them to practice and toss the leather covered sphere. Even at the reunion, Lanier and Duke toss a ball --- again!
"Lanier to Duke
Final Pitch"
The photo is a little fuzzy, but the story and the friendship is clear!
